Transparent OLED Creates Contextual Halo for Branding

We had a chance to catch up with Traylor Woodall, Executive Creative Director, from FiveStone Studios after they earned top honors in the Clear Concept Awards and presented at the Digital Signage Expo 2016. We wanted to ask them about their thoughts and experience with Planar® LookThru™ OLED transparent displays and the opportunities for branding and customer experience that are enabled by this new technology. We started the conversation by asking why the time was right for transparent displays in digital signage. “Planar’s LookThru OLED technology is a powerful tool for cutting through the static,” said Traylor Woodall. “We see an opportunity for More…

Strong Enough to Lift a Car

Superheroes from comics, movies, or television shows are often lauded for their strength. The ability to lift a car being a quintessential demonstration. And it turns out that people want display products, especially in the rental and staging market, that are incredibly strong. Superhero strong. When we announced the Leyard® CarbonLight™ LED displays we knew that people would want to create amazing video floors using the Leyard CarbonLight CLF Series. For a stage floor, we knew it would need to hold up to the weight of dancers and sets. And for auto shows, we knew people would want to park cars on it.  Even though the Leyard CarbonLight CLF displays More…

I've Come for the Displays

Recently Phil Lenger from Show+Tell presented at a conference and said that their goal is to get their customers’ advertising to be so compelling that people want to experience them. He provocatively proposed that no one ever said “I like coming here to watch the displays.” In my experience, that is not true. Plenty of people have come to the Cowboys Stadium or the Texas Motor Speedway to experience the huge displays. The big displays are one of the main appeals of Times Square in New York. And the appeal of the new Planar® LookThru™ OLED transparent display is identifying opportunities for making the video a destination, not just something that More…

Digital Signage Trends: LED Backlights

By James WoodThe description of digital signage might compete with the military for the EUA award (Excessive Use of Acronyms). You can look at getting an LCD with HDMI and DVI input so the PC content is in HD. Add to the list CCFL and LED when referring to the way the screen is lit. Since liquid crystal displays (LCDs) don’t produce any light, they need to be lit from behind. The old standard has been to use cold compact florescent lights (CCFL) because it produces a uniform light across the whole screen for an affordable price. But light emitting diodes (LEDs) have improved to the point where they are taking over for the CCFLs. The Planar ep46L and More…

Mood Lighting

There’s growing scientific research that shows mood lighting isn’t just a saying, it’s a physiological effect. In one study it’s shown that exposure to high levels of light in the time before sleeping reduces the depth and restfulness of sleep. Turning the lights down low signals our bodies to start unwinding and producing the melatonin necessary for restful slumber. But lots of times we’re in places where the lights are bright and shining in our faces. There’s also research that shows the major component of energy consumption on LCD screens is the brightness. According to CNET, “brightness trumps every other setting for saving power,” meaning that no More…

Brain Rules

Scientists have been busy unlocking the secrets of the human brain: how it works, how it fails and what all that means. The field of neuroscience is making new discoveries daily, but who’s to explain the science to the rest of us? John Medina (Dr. Medina, that is) is a neuroscientist at the University of Washington. He’s not only a researcher but also an educator training up young scientists-to-be. But what you really need to know about him is that he’s been able to translate the obtuse language of the academy into a few simple statements. The research on the human brain can be summed up and applied to daily life and Medina writes about it in his More…

From Chandeliers to Emergency Shelters

By: Jennifer Davis - Jennifer B. Davis is all about technology innovation and is a customer advocate, business executive, mom, and loves her job as Planar's VP of marketing.  She often writes about the intersection of art, design, and display technology.Innovation is unpredictable.  Dror Benshetrit’s QuaDror architecture which was first designed to make a table-top chandelier for Swarovski has been extended to create a strong and sustainable way to fashion emergency shelters for disaster relief. As we have seen some of the incredible things that people are doing with Clarity Matrix, I am excited to see how far the technology can go.
