Finding Digital Wallpaper

By Jennifer DavisAs people are using the Clarity™ Matrix LCD Video Wall for art or ambiance, we get questions from our resellers and clients as to where they can find artwork to put on their Matrix that shows off the massive resolution that is possible when you tile the displays together into a wall-size array. For instance, a 3x3 Clarity Matrix MX-46 is over 4,000 pixels wide. A 3x3 wall of our new MX-55 version is 5,760 pixels wide and 3,240 pixels tall. And using full-resolution artwork is stunning on the display, as those who saw our booth at InfoComm can attest. There are a variety of stock photography and video houses that provide high-resolution More…

Design Thinking and the Clarity Matrix

By Jennifer B. DavisI have been reading a great book by Tim Brown, a founder and thought leader at the famed industrial design firm, IDEO, called “Change by Design: How Design Thinking Transforms Organizations and Inspires Innovation.” In the book he emphasizes that traditional fields of design (i.e., art, architecture, etc…) approach problems differently than other disciplines and having a more design-centric view can lead to more revolutionary outcomes. Hospital emergency room redesign, an example he uses in the book, is not just about the efficiency of filling out forms or the staff-to-patient ratio, but about the materials in the waiting room and More…

Digital Signage Trends: 3D

Despite the fact that 3D displays and projectors are growing in popularity, it was noticeably absent from InfoComm 2011 (though it was featured as a special interest). One of the biggest arguments within the 3D world right now is between active and passive glasses. For the human brain to perceive a three-dimensional image, each eye needs to see a different signal. Active 3D uses glasses with shutters in them. About sixty times a second the shutters close and then open and each eye alternates. Everything is linked to the TV so that the right eye image is displayed while the right eye piece is open on the glasses. Then it switches for the left eye More…

Oh, to Be a Kid Again

By Jennifer DavisYears ago, I remember sitting with my best friend Stacy and drafting a letter to Mattel®. In the letter we made a list, an impressive list if memory serves, of the kind of Barbies they should add to their line-up. Themed Barbies based on styles of clothing, hometowns, favorite sports teams and pets, and careers. I recall we received an encouraging, but non-committal form letter in response. Disappointed that we weren’t whisked off to Mattel’s headquarters to engineer their new holiday line-up, we went back our toys. Now, I hear that there is a brand-new "I Can Be...™ Architect Barbie®" available from Mattel in partnership with the More…

The beige boxes and giant More…

Digital Signage Trends: LED Backlights

By James WoodThe description of digital signage might compete with the military for the EUA award (Excessive Use of Acronyms). You can look at getting an LCD with HDMI and DVI input so the PC content is in HD. Add to the list CCFL and LED when referring to the way the screen is lit. Since liquid crystal displays (LCDs) don’t produce any light, they need to be lit from behind. The old standard has been to use cold compact florescent lights (CCFL) because it produces a uniform light across the whole screen for an affordable price. But light emitting diodes (LEDs) have improved to the point where they are taking over for the CCFLs. The Planar ep46L and More…

Be in the Center of the Action

By James WoodOur field of view is everything that we can see at one time. Human sight can take in 180 degrees of horizontal visual information including the main vision and peripheral vision. From top to bottom, we can take in about 100 degrees of vision. So if you’re standing just ten feet from something it would need to be about 35 feet wide to fill you whole visual field (and about 20 feet tall). Since we can only really see with any clarity within about a 120 degree arc, the realistic size of an immersive screen would have to be 20 feet tall by 25 feet wide. A wall display that provided complete immersion for someone standing just 10 feet away More…
