Don't Forget the Audio

It’s a dirty little secret in the display industry; displays look better with great audio. This is illustrated powerfully in the home theater business where Runco projectors are put into acoustically-friendly rooms with fantastic audio. Film makers know it is critical for storytelling. The new generation of Planar® UltraRes™ Series displays have integrated speakers. For digital signage applications, audio is most commonly paired with touch screens to provide the ultimate interactive experience. In corporate settings, audio is often used for teleconferencing. With Planar’s 4K displays, there is advanced functionality that allows the user to show More…

The User is Always Right. Creating Interactive Content

In the first post of this series, we talked about the tools, both software and hardware, used to create and deploy interactive content. In this second post, we will discuss some basics of user interface design. There are agencies and experts that literally spend a life-time designing, testing, and refining user interfaces. There are awards given, books written, and we won’t dare to cover the full range of this discipline of User Interface Design or User Experience Design. There is simply too much to cover. But there are a few things that we’d recommend you keeping in mind when designing touch content for Planar displays. 1. Consider the physical More…

eTail Showrooms

There is an interesting trend occurring that contradicts the pundits who predict the demise of brick-and-mortar: pure-play etailers dabbling in physical stores. Last September, Gap-owned Piperlime opened a shop in the Manhattan neighborhood of SoHo, showcasing highlights from their line. Online eyeglass retailer, Warby Parker, opened physical stores in New York and on Newbury Street in Boston this Spring, expanding their “try at home” program to try in the store. Just in time for their well-publicized “Man of Steel” product tie-ins. Neil Blumenthal, founder of Warby Parker summarized it well in an interview last month with Lauren Sherman from More…

Touch Is The New Interface

It used to be that you had to put signs or attract loops telling customers to interact, but now mobile phones and natural human interface developments have us touching everything. We have been in the kiosk and point of sales touch screen business for a long time and we can tell you that interactivity is becoming increasingly important. The category is one of the fastest growing in the display space with year over year growth upwards of 30% with no end in sight. Planar’s touch screen display line-up has grown to include not only the small format displays like 15” to 27”, but larger single and tiled displays up to 300” diagonal for multi-user More…

What if Plato had Three Planar Monitors?

There has been plenty of research showing that multiple monitors and or larger monitors on the desktop improve productivity and satisfaction. Example of such research comes from companies like Microsoft, HP, and Apple. But can three or more monitors change your life and extend your mind?  That is exactly what Alex Wilhelm postured in this interesting article on workspace productivity. If you are ready for a mind extending experience consider adding a Planar® Helium™ Windows 8 touch display or our beautifully designed 27” QHD display to your desktop. With native 2560x1440 resolution, the Planar® PX2790MW delivers 77% more resolution than a Full HD More…

The birth of the interactor: Planar drives interactive experiences

The world is buzzing about interactivity with nearly 11 million Google searches every month on the topic. Among our customers and clients, the conversations around digital signage are trending more towards creating interactive experiences. At it’s heart, interactivity is the intersection of information science, communication, and industrial design.  The interactivity can be as simple as sliders or buttons on a kiosk screen or something that enables content on the display to react to input from a mobile device or third-party data source, like social media streams. It is the push-and-pull of information or content based on physical action by the More…

Great Technology Enables Great Ideas

By Cris DerrTechnology is cool sometimes even jaw dropping like the transparent LCD display presented by Planar at CETW this past week in New York. While people crowded around our transparent display in awe, it was the buzz around the solutions that could be built with such technology that was really inspiring. Great technology enables great ideas. At Planar another technology that enables great ideas is ERO™ for our Clarity™ Matrix LCD Video Wall.ERO does much more than deliver amazing display quality by improving image contrast; it also enables interactive touch solutions on a grand scale. ERO does this in two ways: first it protects the LCD screen More…

Don't Forget Your Employees

By Cris Derr Here's my "Deliver WOW!" moment of the day from IQmetrix Wireless Summit in Miami: Knowledgeable, motivated employees are as important to increasing sales as engaged customers. OK, you're probably thinking "The Miami heat has finally gotten to Cris' Pacific Northwest brain." Possibly. But it's easy to focus on the customer-centric benefits of interactive retail experiences created by iQmetrix XQ software and Planar System stylish touch displays. What has become far clearer to me during my time here at the summit is the importance of employee training as you build more engaging retail spaces. CEOs and other retail leaders at the summit More…
