Alternatives to a Touch Overlay

Our customers love interactive displays. Over the years, touchscreens and multi-touch displays have become a huge part of our product offering and with no surprise. Interactivity encourages customer engagement, brand loyalty, and brings a livelihood to physical spaces, all with a natural user interface. Customers and integrators may think their only path to interactivity on a video wall or large format display is a third-party touch overlay. Something that could transform their LCD or LED display to an interactive touch screen. But there is an alternative. Planar offers a wide variety of products with touch integrated. Video Walls Are Wall Coverings

Video walls refer to the idea that you can tile discreet displays together to get a single display surface.  A single canvas if you will to present your data upon.  This wall for instance is made of 12 super narrow bezel LCD panels (with an image to image gap less in the 5 mm range) creating a bright and compelling impact that is more than what can be done with a single display.  And the market is changing quickly. In the past three years alone there has easy been a 50% decrease in the cost of creating a nearly seamless video wall and as the depth, weight, and complexity of deployments fall rapidly with innovations in LCD video wall technology, they More…

Innovative Technology Can Bring Modernization to Retail Environments

Retailers are always looking for new ways to attract customers into their store through window displays. Not only is this the most expensive real estate in retail, well-fashioned window displays can turn ordinary merchandise into brand experiences that keep people coming to and talking about the store. As part of a workshop at Pratt Institute, entitled Form and Technology, Ben Nimes envisioned a new style of storefront window utilizing Planar® LookThru™ transparent LCD technology. In this futuristic design, the manikins are nude and the transparent displays animate with a live fashion show of clothing and accessories. Perhaps in a carousel of options More…

Line Up

By James WoodIn kindergarten I learned the subtle art of getting in line. At the beginning of class, at the end of class, before lunch and recess getting in line was the rule. We were taught early and often about how important it is to stand in line. Don’t cut. Keep the lines straight. The same practice is applied throughout my life at the coffee shop or the movie theater. Lining up is still important.Lining up is a metaphor for things working perfectly. If everything lines up then all the pieces necessary are exactly where they need to be. When it comes to a multi-panel display the phrase “lining up” is no metaphor for perfection, it’s the More…

Displays as Tough as Glass

By James WoodGlass has a reputation for being weak. When a boxer wants to talk about a foe who’s weak he might say: “He has a glass jaw.” Or there’s the old saying: “Those is glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” We think of glass as being the weak link in our houses or cars. Wood and steel will protect us where polished glass will fail. Granted, the reputation of glass has been earned over a long time, but what glass is doing now is anything but weak.Glass is used to stop bullets in armored cars, to protect astronauts in space and to cover the screen of your smartphone. The brittle analogy for weakness has come a long way through the coaxing of More…

Seen at ICFF, Lived at Planar

I saw this quote in a booth at ICFF. I thought it perfectly captured what Planar's approach is to the markets we serve:"It is our mission to promote public discussion and provide leadership on the role that innovative display technology can play."  In the architecture and design community, we believe that video displays and media products can be more than "big black rectangles." They can be an integral part of the design of a space and used by creatives as they would other cladding, wall covering, or building materials. Products like the Clarity Matrix LCD Video Wall illustrate this well, as interior designers and architects use it to demand more of More…
