What Do You Mean by LED?

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are versatile, energy efficient, and durable. It’s no surprise they’re gaining popularity among a variety of products on the market today. You might be wondering how the LED lights that you see in your kitchen light fixture can possibly be the same lights as the ones that make up your digital signage application. While both applications are referred to with “LED” in the title, the lighting technology is quite different. There are three main types of LEDs that you see in commercial products that are often confused: LED Backlight In so-called LED TVs (really a misnomer—they are LCD displays with LED backlights), the LEDs are More…

How Long is 100,000 Hours?

The typical lifetime of LEDs used in Leyard and Planar’s LED display solutions is 100,000 hours. That means that if you turn on a Leyard DirectLight LED video wall right now, the LED display will run for 100,000 before it achieves half-brightness (and will continue to run beyond that, of course). Let’s put it all into perspective: 100,000 hours is over 11 years 100,000 hours is over 595 weeks 100,000 hours is over 4,000 days What could you do in 100,000 hours? You could watch over 66,666 soccer matches. You could drive from Los Angeles, California to New York, New York 2,439 times. You could have 5,660 Star Wars movie marathons (watching all 8 More…

How much does an LED video wall cost?

This is a frequent question we are asked. Especially after people see the visual impact of a seamless video wall at one of our trade shows or at one of our installations. Like all the great questions of life, the answer requires some explanation. The cost of an LED wall is a function of its physical size, the number of pixels packed into the wall, the quality of the LED components, and other value-added features. So many decisions affect the final price and it is useful to explore them all before selecting a product for your application. We’ll begin with the physical size of the wall. The size of the wall is measured generally in square meters or in More…

Question for Vendors 4.27.17.jpg

What questions should customers be asking their display vendors?

We had a chance to connect recently with Marques Girardelli, our manager of electronics platforms at Planar and Leyard and I asked him “What should customers be asking their integrators and display vendors?” and here were some of the ideas that topped his list. These are all great questions that will help you specify the right display for your next project. Rather than just asking about HDMI 2.0 support, ask about what features are supported What is the max resolution? What color sub-sampling rates are supported, and at what resolutions? What color depth is supported? Is HDCP 2.2 supported? On which connectors? What are the max cable lengths that More…

Why Cables Matter

As a display manufacturer, we typically don’t talk about cables in our marketing and probably leave undiscussed one of the biggest sources of incompatibility and image quality degregation in the market. HDMI cables come in five different performance categories: Standard HDMI cable Standard HDMI cable with Ethernet Standard Automotive HDMI cable High Speed HDMI cable High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet The primary difference between Standard HDMI cables and High Speed HDMI cables relates to the video timing formats that can be supported. Standard HDMI cables can support up to 720p or 1080i, whereas High Speed HDMI cables support 1080p and beyond, More…

How is brightness calculated?

One of the key specifications that customers use to determine what display might be right for their application is brightness. Brightness is measured in candelas per meter squared (cd/m2) or nits. Like “horse power” is to automobile engine power, so are nits to displays. They are simply a measure of how many candles of brightness a display is equivalent to. A 300 nit desktop monitor has the light power of 300 candles lighting a square meter of space. A 1,500 nit outdoor display has the power of 1,500 candles (which seems like a lot, until you do the unfair comparison of a display to the sun, sustains life on earth and is significantly brighter than More…
