For Sandy Anderson, senior buyer at LXE, Inc., there are two primary things she looks for in a supplier: quality and responsiveness. LXE, headquartered near Atlanta, is a worldwide manufacturer of wireless portable computers for inventory management systems. Planar supplies embedded EL displays for LXE’s handheld and vehicle-mounted devices.

For Anderson, quality means making a display that is easy to read, rugged, and most of all reliable. “Our products have to withstand the harshest industrial conditions,” she said. “They’re used in refrigerated warehouses, at ports, on factory floors and must perform indoors and outdoors.” Many of LXE’s devices must pass a rigorous drop test, vibration test and stand up to moisture and temperature extremes.

Quality also means lack of defects. “When the parts arrive at LXE, they go right to the factory floor. They’re not inspected first,” Anderson said. “We trust Planar on that.”

Regarding responsiveness, Anderson says Planar has done a great job of being flexible. For example, in November she called her sales representative at Planar after learning that LXE’s forecasts for the remainder of the year had increased by another 400 pieces. “I asked, ‘Can you handle that?’” Anderson said. “And not only was Planar able to supply the extra 400 displays—which is a lot—I had an answer within 24 hours. Not all suppliers will do that.”
